Hickory Crawdads Lose High Scoring Contest to Wilmington

The Hickory Crawdads, playing as their Couch Potatoes alternate identity, lost 12-8 in a back-and-forth matchup against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The Couch Potatoes got off to an early lead, putting up three in the first. Luisangel Acuña walked, and Aaron Zavala was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Acuña came in to score as Aparicio hit into a ground out that the shortstop committed a fielding error on. Thomas Saggese doubled in Aparicio for the second run of the inning. Cristian Inoa’s base hit brought Saggese in to score, capping off the rally.

Wilmington scored a run in the second and three in the top of the third to take a 4-3 advantage.

The Taters fought back to tie the score at four in the bottom half of the third. Acuña singled and moved into scoring position on Aparicio’s hit. Trevor Hauver drove in the run with a line drive to center.

The Blue Rocks retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Couch Potatoes bounced back to even the score once again. Chris Seise hit his seventh homerun of the season to right-center to make it a 5-5 game.

The teams once again traded runs in the fifth, with each scoring twice. Zavala and Hauver walked to set the stage for Saggese, who delivered a single to third that scored Zavala. Cody Freeman’s base hit to right brought in Hauver to bring it to 7-7.

Wilmington pulled ahead with four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Couch Potatoes got one back in the bottom of the seventh inning on Thomas Saggese’s eighth homerun of the season.
