The Hickory Crawdads ended their road trip against the Rome Braves with a 7-1 loss Sunday in Georgia.
Down 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Hickory’s lone run started with Cody Freeman hitting a single. Thomas Saggese then was walked. Cristian Inoa flied out to center field, but it allowed Freeman to tag up from second. Jaye Easley then ground into a forceout, allowing Freeman to score.
Freeman had the lone hit and run scored. Easley had the RBI despite not getting a hit. Jake Guenther, Aaron Zavala and Luisangel Acuna each had doubles, but all were stranded.
The Braves tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Hickory left eight men on base and was a woeful 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Mason Englert took the tough luck loss on the mound. He went 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, four runs scored, three of which were earned. He struck out five batters and walked only one.
Hickory is 2-1 on the second half of the season and 40-29 overall. The Crawdads are off tomorrow. Hickory returns home to L.P. Frans Stadium to begin a six-game homestand against the Greensboro Grasshoppers starting Tuesday.
