Hickory Crawdads Fall Late to Aberdeen

The Hickory Crawdads bullpen faltered as a 4-1 lead slipped away in the ninth inning and the ‘Dads ultimately lost at Aberdeen, 8-6 in 10 innings.

Hickory started the scoring in the fourth inning. Sebastian Walcott started the inning with his tenth double of the season. Two outs later, Anthony Gutierrez reached base on an error, which allowed Walcott to race home.

In the seventh inning, Hickory made it 2-0. Quincy Scott walked and Benjamin Blackwell singled. Alejandro Osuna pushed both of them into scoring position by laying down a sacrifice bunt. Cameron Cauley then drove in Scott with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Aberdeen would score their first run in the eighth inning, but Hickory would respond with a run of their own in the top of the ninth. With one away, Blackwell was walked. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and Osuna moved him to third as he ground out. A second wild pitch allowed Blackwell to score.

However, the wheels fell off in the bottom of the ninth. An IronBird home run opened the inning, followed by a double and a walk before the first out of the inning. A ground ball single tied the game at four.

In the top of the tenth, Hickory had Cauley start on second base. With one one, Sebastian Walcott was hit by a pitch. A double steal put runners into scoring position and Yosy Galan doubled them home for a 6-4 advantage.

In the home of the tenth, the designated runner stole third and after a walk, both scored on a double to tie the game. A home run with a runner on second ended the game in the IronBirds favor, 8-6.

Walcott had a pair of hits and two runs scored for Hickory. Konner Piotto also had two hits for Hickory. Galan, with his double in the tenth inning, had two RBI.

Hickory falls to 26-34 on the first half of the season. They will face Aberdeen this weekend on the road before returning to L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday to take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
