The Hickory Crawdads carried a one-run lead into the sixth inning Thursday night, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans rallied for a 5-2 victory at Pelicans Ballpark to end Hickory’s four-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, the Crawdads remain atop the Carolina League South Division second-half standings at 10-2 and are 44-32 overall. Hickory still leads the six-game series 2-1.

The Crawdads answered an early Myrtle Beach run with a two-run fourth inning to take their only lead of the game.

Angel Arredondo drew a leadoff walk before Luis Marquez singled to put two runners aboard. After a groundout moved the runners into scoring position, Arredondo raced home on a wild throw during Braylin Morel’s stolen-base attempt to tie the game at 1-1. Curley Martha followed with a two-out RBI double to left field, scoring Morel for a 2-1 Hickory advantage.

The Pelicans responded in the bottom of the sixth. Eli Lovich led off with a double before Derniche Valdez tied the game with an RBI triple. Valdez then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to put Myrtle Beach ahead 3-2.

The hosts added insurance in the eighth inning on sacrifice flies by Geuri Lubo and Darlyn De Leon, extending the lead to 5-2.

Hickory collected five hits, with Marquez and Martha accounting for two apiece. Martha finished 2-for-3 with a walk and the Crawdads’ lone RBI, while Marquez went 2-for-4. Marco Argudin added Hickory’s other hit.

The Crawdads struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, finishing 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven runners on base. Hickory also struck out 11 times.

Starter Antoine Lafalaise allowed one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out four. Left-hander Geury Rodriguez (4-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Adam Trausch surrendered two runs in 1 1/3 innings before Francisco Martinez recorded the final two outs.

Edwardo Melendez (2-2) earned the win in relief for Myrtle Beach, while Jordan Henriquez worked the ninth inning for his fourth save.

The Crawdads and Pelicans continue their six-game series Friday at Pelicans Ballpark. Hickory is scheduled to start right-hander Daniel Keaney (1-0, 0.00 ERA) against Myrtle Beach right-hander Braylon Myers (3-1, 2.18 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Thursday’s game lasted 2 hours, 36 minutes before a crowd of 3,264. The weather at first pitch was 84 degrees with clear skies and a 10 mph wind blowing in from center field.
