Hickory Crawdads Drop Series Opener Against Rome

The Hickory Crawdads opened their six game road trip against the Rome Braves last night falling 8-6.

The Crawdads took an early 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Keyber Rodriguez singled, he moved to second on an error on a pickoff attempt and got to third on a Max Acosta single. He would score on Tucker Mitchell’s groundout. However, the Braves would answer with two runs in the home half of the third.

In the fifth inning, Jayce Easley singled on the first pitch of the inning. Rodriguez would lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Easley to second base. A balk was issued moving Easley to third. Max Acosta doubled, scoring Easley tying the score. One out later, Abimelec Ortiz homered giving Hickory a 4-2 lead.

However, the Braves scored four runs in the sixth. Hickory would add a run in the seventh. Rodriguez singled to open the inning. Another pickoff attempt went awry, moving Rodriguez to second. Two outs later, Ortiz singled, scoring Rodriguez.

Hickory tied the game in the top of the eighth. Hickory newcomer Cameron Cauley singled and then stole second. Geisel Cepeda singled moving Cauley to third. He scored when Daniel Mateo hit into a double play. But Rome responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth and Hickory couldn’t answer in the ninth.

Ortiz had three RBI on his two hits. Rodriguez, Acosta, and Cauley all had three hits.

Hickory falls to 14-4 on the second half of the season. The Crawdads stay on the road this week in Georgia.
