Hickory Crawdads Drop Season Opener at Rome

The Hickory Crawdads lost to the Rome Emperors 4-0 in the 2024 season opener on the road.

The Emperors scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, and a runner on second, Rome got a single to left field, allowing the runner on second to score.

Hickory went three-up-three-down for the first three innings. After the first two batters were flyed out and struck out respectively in the fourth inning, Tucker Mitchell collected the Crawdads first hit of the season. Anthony Gutierrez followed with a single, but Hickory would have both runners stranded.

The Crawdads got only one more hit on the night. With two out in the top of the ninth, Benjamin Blackwell singled. In addition, Hickory only walked on three occasions, and advanced to first twice on errors, thus having only eight base runners in the contest.

Rome collected a run in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth for the final 4-0 score.

Hickory continues the series in Rome Saturday and Sunday. They will be off and have their first home game of the season on Tuesday against the Jersey Shore Blue Claws.
