Hickory Crawdads Down Winston-Salem 4-1

The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 4-1 Friday evening on the road. Hickory pulled away with a pair of runs in the final frame to seal the win.

Hickory scored first in the third inning. With Yosy Galan on base and no one out, Benjamin Blackwell hit a grounder to the shortstop who committed a throwing error, allowing Galan to score.

The Crawdads picked up another run in the top of the sixth inning. With one away, Luis Mieses doubled. Ian Moller singled placing runners on the corners. When Moller stole second base, a throwing error by the catcher allowed Mieses to score.

Hickory tacked on two more in the top of the ninth. Galan opened the inning by hitting his fifth home run of the season. Blackwell doubled and moved to third on Alejandro Osuna’s sacrifice bunt. Blackwell scored on Cameron Cauley’s single.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded, a ground ball single allowed one run to score for the Dash, but it would be the final one of the contest as Hickory won 4-1.

The Crawdads pitching staff was solid, led by starter Joseph Montalvo. He pitched five innings, allowing only three hits and walking only one while striking out three. Jackson Kelley took over for two innings, allowing one hit and walking one while striking out one. Damian Mendoza pitched the eighth inning in perfect fashion and Gavin Collyer pitched the ninth, allowing two hits, hitting two batters, and allowing the lone run for the Dash.

Hickory improves to 20-29 on the first half of the season. They remain in Winston-Salem over the weekend.
