The Hickory Crawdads needed just five hits to score seven runs Saturday night, taking advantage of three Myrtle Beach errors and a shutdown effort from the bullpen to rally for a 7-4 victory over the Pelicans before a crowd of 5,369 at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Crawdads (45-33, 11-3 second half) erased a three-run deficit by scoring two runs in the sixth, two more in the seventh and adding insurance runs in the eighth to trim Myrtle Beach’s series lead to 3-2 heading into Sunday’s finale.

Hickory struck first in the opening inning when Angel Arredondo lined an RBI single to score Marco Argudin for a 1-0 lead.

The Pelicans (33-45, 6-8 second half) answered in the third on Alexey Lumpuy’s solo home run before taking control with a three-run fourth. Jose Silva delivered a two-run single, and Lumpuy added an RBI single to cap the inning and give Myrtle Beach a 4-1 advantage.

The Crawdads began chipping away in the sixth. Yolfran Castillo drew a leadoff walk before Argudin singled and Paulion Santana worked another free pass to load the bases. Deward Tovar lifted a sacrifice fly to score Castillo, and Daniel Flames reached on a fielding error that allowed Argudin to cross the plate, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Hickory completed the comeback an inning later, again taking advantage of Pelicans mistakes. Braylin Morel walked and Sebastian Baquera was hit by a pitch before a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Castillo then reached on an error to load the bases. Argudin’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-4 before Castillo stole second base. Another walk to Santana and a passed ball allowed Baquera to score the go-ahead run, giving the Crawdads a 5-4 lead.

The Crawdads added breathing room in the eighth when Flames walked and scored on Marcos Torres’ RBI double. Morel followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Torres for the final 7-4 margin.

Although Hickory managed only five hits, the Crawdads drew five walks, were hit by three pitches and capitalized on three Myrtle Beach errors to manufacture seven runs. Torres finished 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Argudin went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Arredondo, Santana and Castillo each added a hit, with Castillo also stealing his 35th base of the season.

After starter Enrique Deakins allowed four runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings, Luis Muñoz stabilized the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Jormy Nivar (4-0) earned the victory. Nivar blanked the Pelicans over the final four innings, allowing four hits while striking out three.

The Pelicans outhit Hickory 11-5, led by Lumpuy’s 4-for-5 performance, but Myrtle Beach was undone by defensive miscues and missed opportunities after taking the early lead.

The series concludes Sunday evening at Pelicans Ballpark. Right-hander Evan Siary (2-2, 4.26 ERA) is scheduled to start for Hickory against Myrtle Beach right-hander Noah Edders (0-2, 3.46).
