Heat Health Alert Issued By State Officials

RALEIGH, N.C. (WHKY) – The NC Department of Health and Human Services has issued a “Heat Health Alert” for September 1-3 in Alexander County. The maximum heat index is expected to be 98 degrees on September 1, 102 degrees on September 2, and 101 degrees on September 3. Citizens are advised to stay safe outdoors. 

According to a news release issued by Alexander County Government, heat of this magnitude can be dangerous to your health, particularly for people who are more exposed to extreme heat or more sensitive to extreme heat. This includes:

• People without access to air conditioning

• People working or exercising outdoors

• Older adults

• Pregnant women

• People with disabilities

• People with underlying health conditions

To prevent heat-related illness:

• Drink plenty of fluids

• Avoid caffeinated, sugary, or alcoholic drinks

• Reduce outdoor activities

• Stay in air conditioning as much as possible

• Watch for symptoms of heat-related illness

• Stay informed
