Granite Falls Woman Killed In Crash, Wilkesboro Man Charged

A Caldwell County woman was killed in a crash Tuesday (August 1) in Iredell County. The deceased is 47-year-old Misty Leigh Shook of Granite Falls.

On Tuesday, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to Interstate 77 North near US 21 (Exit 33). A 2000 Ford F150 was traveling north in the HOV lane on I-77, failed to reduce speed adequately, and collided with a 2016 Toyota Scion that had broken down and was stopped in the HOV lane. After the initial collision, the Ford F150 spun out of control to the right and struck a 2014 Ford Escape also traveling north.

The driver of the Scion, Misty Leigh Shook, passed away as a result of her injuries at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported by EMS to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, in critical condition. The driver of the F150, 48-year-old Bret Edward Shove of Wilkesboro, was transported by EMS to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Escape were not injured.

The initial investigation indicates impairment to be a contributing factor. Shove was charged with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and other traffic violations. Upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, additional charges will be filed. I-77 was closed in the area for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.
