North Carolina Governor Josh Stein traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to meet with members of the state’s congressional delegation and request more than $10 billion in additional federal funding for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in western North Carolina. Stein, joined by State Senator Kevin Corbin, said the region continues to face significant rebuilding needs despite billions already committed by state, federal, and private partners.

The governor’s updated request includes funding for housing, water and sewer infrastructure, local roads and dams, economic recovery, private bridges and roads, federal highways, and local government support. Stein noted that Helene caused nearly $60 billion in damage statewide.

According to the governor’s office, North Carolina has already secured $8.3 billion in federal assistance and has repaired or rebuilt more than 1,000 homes, with thousands more in the recovery pipeline. Stein said continued federal support is critical to helping western North Carolina fully recover and build stronger, more resilient communities.
