Governor Josh Stein is highlighting the connection between workforce development and affordable housing after visiting Pitt Community College’s construction and industrial technology program.

Stein says North Carolina must build significantly more homes to address a projected shortage of more than 750,000 housing units by 2029. During the visit, he praised the college for training students in construction trades while helping provide affordable housing in local communities.

The visit follows Stein’s recent executive order aimed at increasing housing supply, affordability, and access across the state. His proposed budget also includes investments in affordable housing programs and expanded apprenticeship opportunities in high-demand fields, including construction.

State leaders say strengthening the construction workforce is a key step toward meeting North Carolina’s growing housing needs while connecting residents with good-paying careers.
