RALEIGH, N.C. (WHKY) — A new nonprofit foundation has been established to provide financial assistance and other support to employees of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) and their families during times of need.

The NCDAC Employee Foundation, Inc. was created to assist correctional employees affected by line-of-duty deaths, natural disasters, personal tragedies and other hardships. Officials said the organization is modeled after similar foundations operating in other states.

Governor Josh Stein praised the creation of the foundation, saying correctional employees work every day to keep North Carolina communities safe and deserve support during difficult times.

First Lady Anna Stein said the foundation will provide needed assistance so correctional employees can remain focused on the department’s mission of public safety and rehabilitation.

NCDAC Secretary Leslie Dismukes said establishing the foundation has been a priority since taking office and called it an important way to recognize the dedication and sacrifices made by correctional employees across the state.

To help launch the foundation, Dismukes is directing half of the proceeds from the 11th Annual Secretary’s Cup Golf Tournament to the organization. Additional funding is expected through the State Employees Combined Campaign, fundraising events and other approved efforts.

The foundation’s board includes current and former correctional employees, representatives from several state employee organizations, a philanthropist and the daughter of a fallen employee. The board is expected to hold its first meeting this month to adopt bylaws, begin applying for federal tax-exempt status and start foundation operations.
