Fire Hydrant Testing Scheduled In Morganton
MORGANTON, N.C. – The City of Morganton will begin its annual fire hydrant testing program on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with testing continuing through Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Hydrant testing will take place nightly beginning at 10:00 p.m. in various areas throughout the City. Testing is conducted to ensure that the City’s fire hydrants are operating properly and are available for use by emergency personnel when needed.
Residents in and around the testing areas may notice temporary discoloration or cloudiness of their water while hydrant testing is underway.
Although the water may appear discolored, it is generally not harmful. Residents are encouraged to avoid doing laundry during or immediately following testing in their area. If discolored water occurs, running the cold water tap for several minutes can help clear the lines.

The City of Morganton regularly performs fire hydrant testing to ensure adequate water flow and pressure for firefighting and to identify functionality and deficiencies before an emergency occurs. North Carolina Fire Code and NFPA 25 require periodic inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire hydrants. Testing also supports the ISO/Verisk Public Protection Classification (PPC) of a community’s fire protection capabilities.
Maintaining reliable, properly tested hydrants can help support a favorable PPC rating, which may contribute to lower property insurance rates. Hydrant flushing is also essential in maintaining water quality.
The City of Morganton appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation while this important maintenance and safety work is completed. Testing schedules may be adjusted as necessary due to weather, emergency operations, or other unforeseen circumstances.
For questions or additional information regarding hydrant testing, residents may contact the City of Morganton’s Water Resources Department.
