Fire Causes Moderate Damages at St. Stephens H.S.

The St. Stephens Fire Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at St. Stephens High School today. Firefighters responded at about 11:15 this morning and had the fire under control approximately 30 minutes later.

The fire originated in a heating & air conditioning unit in a classroom building. The building is on the site of new construction, but was in a pre-existing structure. No students and only a few staff members were present. The building was without power as a result of yesterday’s storm. The day was set aside for remote learning only.

No injuries to school staffers or Firefighters were reported. The scene was cleared by about one o’clock this afternoon. Damages caused by fire, smoke, and water were described as moderate. According to a spokesperson with the St. Stephens Fire Dept., the building should be back in use by next week.

The Hickory Fire Department, the Catawba Co. Fire Marshal’s Office, and Catawba Co. E.M.S. also responded to the scene.
