According to a letter issued today (October 6) by Hickory Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Bryan Taylor, the system will be adding extra safety precautions to home football games at Hickory High School starting Friday (October 8).
Before fans can enter the football stadium, they will go through a screening process involving walk-through metal detectors in addition to a possible wand search. Parts of the campus and stadium will have limited fan access. Students in grades K-8 will not be allowed to attend without a guardian who is 18 or older.
The precautions are being put in place due to recent reports of gun violence in schools. Dr. Taylor cites incidents over the past six weeks including school shootings in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and fans are asked to arrive early to get through the screening process.
