Elderly Hiddenite Man Dies in Friday A.M. Crash

An accident this morning (May 31) in Alexander County has claimed the life of a Hiddenite man. The deceased is 80-year-old James D. Durmire.

At about 8:50 a.m. today, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene on U.S. Highway 64 near Boston Road. A 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Mr. Durmire was traveling east on U.S. 64 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer.

Mr. Durmire passed away at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 61-year-old Taylorsville man, was not injured.

The initial investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were NOT contributing factors in the collision. U.S. 64 was closed in the area for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation.
