Early Morning Motorcycle Crash Results In Fatality

A man was killed in a motorcycle crash this morning (May 23) in Iredell County. The deceased is 35-year-old Dustin Kyle Pope of Statesville.

Today (May 23), at approximately 1:40 a.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to I-77 North near mile marker 56. A 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on I-77, failed to adequately reduce speed, and collided with a northbound 1998 International box truck.

The driver of the motorcycle, Dustin Kyle Pope, was ejected and passed away as a result of his injuries at the scene. The driver of the box truck, a Charlotte resident, was not injured.

The initial investigation indicates excessive speed to be the contributing factor in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
