Durham Water Feature Identified As Likely Source Of Rare Brain Infection

DURHAM, N.C. (WHKY) – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says a water feature at a community-based organization in Durham was the most likely source of exposure in a previously reported case of a rare brain infection caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri.

The investigation involved interviews with the patient’s family, water testing, and support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 17-year-old victim died on August 31st.

The teen reportedly had contact with the water feature during the likely exposure period, including splashing water on the face. The feature was closed August 28 and later tested positive for the amoeba. It remains closed to the public.

Naegleria infections are extremely rare. The amoeba can cause a serious brain infection when contaminated water enters the nose. Symptoms include severe headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting, and can progress rapidly.

Health officials recommend preventing warm freshwater from entering the nose and using only distilled water for nasal rinsing.
