Driver in Fatal Collision Charged with Multiple Violations

32-year-old Michael Leon Travis of Claremont has been charged with driving while license revoked, a seatbelt violation, a child restraint violation, a registration violation, an insurance violation, an inspection violation, and unsafe tires. He was charged in connection to a fatal collision in Catawba County on May 23. The deceased is 77-year-old Herman Edgar Phillips of Claremont.

The accident occurred at about 8:15 a.m. Monday (May 23) on Oxford School Road at the intersection of River Bend Road. A southbound 2000 Toyota Rav4 driven by Mr. Phillips attempted to turn right onto Oxford School Road, failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign, and collided with a westbound 2000 Toyota Tacoma driven by Michael Leon Travis. Mr. Phillips passed away at the scene. WHKY previously reported the accident on May 23.

Travis and an adult passenger from each vehicle were also hospitalized, along with a 7-year-old child who was in the Tacoma. The passenger in the Rav4 sustained minor injuries and was released Monday. No update is available regarding the condition of the other injured persons. Travis is scheduled to make an appearance in District Court Friday (May 27) in Newton.
