BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (WHKY)  — Hikers heading to the Fonta Flora State Trail near Lake James will need to continue following a detour as Duke Energy works on a new public access area.

The detour has been in place since last October and is expected to remain through the end of this year while construction continues.

Despite the temporary reroute, trail users can still hike up to four-tenths of a mile in each direction toward the construction area to enjoy some of the lake’s scenic views before turning around and following the marked detour. The alternate route is identified by red diamond trail blazes.

When the project is complete, the new access area will include a boat launch, courtesy dock, parking area, and restrooms, giving visitors improved access to Lake James.

Hikers are also being reminded to watch for construction traffic near Eagle’s Nest Way while work is underway.
