Detention Officer Fired, Charged With Using Excessive Force

A detention sergeant in Burke County has been fired and charged for allegedly using excessive force. The officer in question was 48-year-old Ravi Dahyalal Patel of South Sterling Street in Morganton. The Burke County Jail Captain opened an investigation on January 30, 2021, regarding a report of excessive use of force by a detention officer in the Burke County Jail. Following the initial internal investigation, Patel was placed on suspended leave with pay February 2.

At that time, Sheriff Steve Whisenant requested the SBI conduct an independent investigation and requested the District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office prosecute any criminal violations found as a result of that probe. On February 5, Patel was terminated from the Sheriff’s Office. At the conclusion of the SBI Investigation, the results were turned over to the District Attorney’s Office.

Following the DA’s review, the investigating SBI Agent took the information to a Burke County magistrate. The magistrate issued a criminal summons Tuesday (March 23) for simple assault. The summons stated that Patel assaulted a man in custody by pushing that individual while he was handcuffed behind his back. Patel has a District Court date May 17.
