CVCC Softball Sweeps Home Doubleheader Against Pitt CC

The Catawba Valley Community College softball team swept a home doubleheader against Pitt Community College Monday, winning game one 10-1 and game two, 6-0.

In game one, the Red Hawks banged out three home runs in the run-ruled contest. On the mound, Mayson Lail gave up a home run, but it was one of only three hits she would give up in five innings pitched. Of the 19 batters she face, she struck out 11 and did not allow a walk.

In the first inning, with one out, CVCC scored first a three run inning. Jessica Cannon doubled and then stole third. Camryn Bryant reached on an error and would then steal second. After Chesney Stikeleather walked, Pitt got the first out of the inning. But the next batter, Emma Kuproski singled. This scored Cannon and Bryant and moved Stikeleather to third. Kuproski was caught stealing second base, but it allowed Stikeleather to score.

In the second inning, with two out, Bryant and Stikeleather hit back to back singles. Annie Andrews then hit a home run to left center field, clearing the bases. Kuproski came up to bat next and hit a home run to right field to extend the Red Hawks lead to 7-1.

Kiana Mullner would hit a solo home run in the third inning with one away to extend the Red Hawks lead to 8-1. In the fourth inning, with two out and runners on the corners, a passed ball allowed Annie Andrews to score. Abby Teague then singled, scoring Grace Andrews.

In game two, Catawba Valley would strike first in the bottom of the third inning. Cannon tripled to open the inning, but would stay put as Bryant singled. A double steal allowed Cannon to score and Bryant move to second. Two outs later, Kuproski doubled to score Bryant.

Teague singled to open the fourth inning and would later score. In the fifth, after Stikeleather was walked, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. She scored on a Kuproski sacrifice.

In the sixth inning with one out, Cannon walked then stole second. Bryant singled and that would allow Cannon to score. Bryant would be able to advance to second. One out later, Annie Andrews was walked. A passed ball allowed Bryant to score.

Jillian Jones picked up the win in the circle for the Red Hawks. She pitched all seven innings, allowing only one hit while striking out two and walking none. She pitched to just 21 batters.

The wins improve the Red Hawks to 28-6 overall, 15-3 in Region X, Division 2 play. CVCC will go on the road Wednesday to face Southwest Virginia Community College.
