The 19th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College softball team dropped both of its games during Saturday’s doubleheader against No. 20 Pitt at the Big League Camp.
CVCC’s record now stands at 5-3 overall on the season.
Game one: No. 20 Pitt 13, No. 19 CVCC 9
The Red Hawks gave up nine Bulldog runs in the first two innings and a late comeback by Catawba Valley fell short in a four-run loss in game one of the twin bill.
Shortstop Grace Andrews and pitcher Cali Hinnant led the Red Hawks in the contest — each hitting their first collegiate home runs during Saturday’s first game. Andrews, Hinnant and catcher Ashlyn Parsons tallied a team-high two hits apiece.
Hinnant, who replaced starting pitcher Payton Goble after the first inning, tallied seven strikeouts in six innings.
Game two: No. 20 Pitt 9, No. 19 CVCC 1 (five innings)
Three early Red Hawk errors allowed the Bulldogs to build an early lead as CVCC dropped the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Catcher Kylie Lapham led the Red Hawks with two hits and a run scored in the contest, while left fielder Payton Goble added a hit and an RBI.
Making her first collegiate start, pitcher Abby Helms allowed seven hits, four runs, one walk and struck out one batter in 4.2 innings.
The CVCC softball team will try to bounce back on Friday when it travels to Franklin, Va. to take on Camp Community College. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
