CVCC Softball Advances in Region X Tournament With Doubleheader Sweep
Catawba Valley Community College softball team won its first round series of the Region 10 Tournament. CVCC swept a doubleheader against Fayetteville Tech winning 12-1 in game one and 6-1 in game two. CVCC wins the best of three series, 2-0 and will move on in the Region X Tournament.
The Red Hawks won handedly in game one of the series, 12-1. Jessica Cannon had three runs scored for the Red Hawks on three hits and also stole three bases. Emma Kuproski, Mya Morency, and Alyssa Kropski all hit home runs for CVCC. Kurposki’s was a three run bomb while Morency and Kropski both hit solo shots.
Mayson Lail picked up the complete game win on the mound. She allowed only four hits and one run while striking out seven and walking none in her five innings pitched.
In game two, Fayetteville Tech scored first in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. However, in the home half of the first, Cannon walked and then stole second. Camryn Bryant hit a single, putting runners on the corners. Bryant then stole second base. Chesney Stikeleather flied out to center field, but it allowed both runners to score. Annie Andrews then followed with a solo home run to left field, and CVCC led 3-1 after one.
The Red Hawks scored two more in the second inning. With one out and one on second, Bryant hit a single, allowing Kropski to score. Bryant would advance to second and then steal third before Stikeleather singled her home.
CVCC finished the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with an unearned run as the Red Hawks won game two, 6-1.
Jillian Jones improved to 19-2 in the circle for CVCC with a complete game seven inning contest. She allowed seven hits and one run but struck out two while walking only one.
CVCC, 42-6 on the season, will face either Bryant & Stratton or Richard Bland. Those two squads split their doubleheader on Monday, forcing a deciding game three on Tuesday. The tournament will switch to a double elimination tournament starting on Friday. All games will be hosted by Louisburg College.
