30-year-old Michelle Lynn Sumlin of Nolden Creek Road in Connelly Springs was arrested Wednesday (August 5) by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. She’s charged with felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle in connection to an incident Wednesday. In addition, Sumlin is charged on previous orders for arrest with felony possession with intent to manufacture schedule II controlled substance along with a misdemeanor count of failure to appear on a felony.
Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday a Burke County detective stopped to assist a female on the side of Cape Hickory Road in Hickory. Both of the doors of the woman’s vehicle were open. As the officer approached, the woman took off from the side of the road pulling in front of another vehicle traveling on Cape Hickory Road.
Cars were between the detective and the suspicious vehicle as the detective was attempting to catch up with her. The detective contacted the 911 Center and another Burke County deputy spotted the suspect vehicle on 10th Street and attempted to stop it. The suspect headed towards Hildebran where another patrol deputy joined the chase as the suspect turned onto Highway 70 and headed toward Interstate 40.
The driver attempted to pass another vehicle in the grass on the I-40 west bound ramp at exit 119, lost control, and flipped the vehicle. The suspect, Michelle Lynn Sumlin, was transported to the hospital by Burke County EMS for minor injuries. After receiving medical treatment, she was placed in jail in Morganton under $45,000 secured bond. She remained in jail as of earlier today (August 6). A District Court appearance is scheduled Friday (August 7) and a Superior Court date is September 21. Additional charges are pending.
