Concert to Honor John Coffey to be Held Sunday in Newton

A concert will be held in Newton this Sunday (June 9) in memory and in honor of John Coffey, who passed away on March 4, 2024. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The church choir, various members of the Hickory Choral Society, Puddingstone, and several of John’s friends from the theater community will participate. Everyone who knew John is invited.

Mr. Coffey grew up in Lenoir and graduated from Lenoir High School. He attended both Lenoir-Rhyne College and the North Carolina School of the Arts, and held both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Piano Performance from Julliard.

Mr. Coffey performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony, and the North Carolina Symphony. He was the resident musical director at the Hickory Community Theatre where two musicals that he co-wrote premiered. He served as Executive Director at The Green Room Community Theatre in Newton for six years and co-wrote two musicals that were performed there. In July 1982, Mr. Coffey became the first Artist-in-Residence with the (then) Catawba County Council for the Arts.
