Closures On U.S. 321 Could Begin This Week

Signs have been placed on U.S. 321 warning of nighttime closures on the bridge that connects Catawba and Caldwell Counties over Lake Hickory. According to published reports, the southbound bridge will close, resulting in one lane in each direction.

The reports say that the work could start as early as Wednesday (April 6), and the construction is expected to run until late November of this year. According to information previously released by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the southbound bridge needs repairs to the steel beams holding it up and the asphalt on top. NHM Constructors has been contracted to complete the project.

The published reports say the company said it tentatively plans to start nightly closures on Wednesday. Once the work starts, the road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays. While the southbound bridge is shut down, drivers from Caldwell County into Catawba County will cross on to the northbound bridge, the location of the two travel lanes.

The scheduled completion date is November 30, and the road cannot be closed on weekends or holidays. According to information previously released by the NCDOT, both the north and southbound bridges are expected to be replaced entirely when U.S. 321 is expanded to six lanes in the future.
