City Proposes Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Upgrades Along N.C. 127
The City of Hickory plans to make safety improvements along Second Street NE, also known as N.C. 127, from 12th Avenue NE to 16th Avenue NW.
Residents were invited to attend a drop-in style, personal question and answer, meeting on Monday, May 18, in Council Chambers at the Julian G. Whitener Municipal Building. Infrastructure Grants Manager Karen Dickerson and Transportation & Engineering Manager Caroline Kone answered questions, noted feedback, and heard transportation needs from residents.
To help fund the sidewalk and intersection improvements, City staff said it was pursuing a grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All Grant Program. The proposed improvements were identified during development of Hickory Moving Forward, a comprehensive transportation safety action plan that was recently adopted by the City.
The City stated community feedback was considered vital to the grant application process and encouraged participation from residents, pedestrians, and motorists.
Anyone unable to attend the meeting can still contact Infrastructure Grants Manager Karen Dickerson at kdickerson@hickorync.gov or 828-323-7488 to ask questions and provide input on the project. The full Hickory Moving Forward plan was made available here.
