Child Dies in Apparent Accidental Shooting

An eight-year-old child has died as the result of an apparent accidental shooting in Alexander County.

Yesterday (December 20), Alexander Co. Sheriff’s Officers and Alexander County E.M.S. were dispatched to a home in Stony Point regarding a male child who had been shot with a BB gun. Officers arrived to find that the child had been struck in the chest with a single shot from a BB or pellet gun.

The boy was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital. The child was evaluated at Iredell then transferred to Brenner’s Children’s hospital in Winston-Salem. During transport, the child went into cardiac arrest and was diverted to Davie Medical Center. The boy died from his injuries at Davie Medical Center.

The initial investigation appears to indicate that the injury was accidental. The shooting occurred when two juveniles (ages eight and seven) were shooting a BB gun and a pellet rifle at targets near the family home.

The investigation is continuing.
