Charges Filed, Suspect Sought In Connection To Fatal Crash
Charges have been filed in connection to a fatal crash and authorities were seeking the suspect in the case. On February 24, 2023, shortly before 12:30 a.m., the Statesville Police Department responded to a traffic collision with injuries near the intersection of East Broad Street and Cynthia Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a red 1995 Honda Civic and a 2007 Honda Civic that were involved in a head-on collision.
The driver of the red 1995 Honda Civic, Gabino Hernandez Nunez, and the driver of the 2007 Honda Civic were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center by Iredell County EMS. Both passengers of the 1995 red Honda Civic were transported to Carolinas Medical Center by air ambulance.
During the investigation, it was determined that Nunez was traveling east on East Broad Street when he crossed over the center line and struck the other vehicle head on. It was also discovered that Nunez was under the influence and impaired at the time of the collision, and he was subsequently charged with driving while impaired. On February 26, Juvencio Mata Carbajal, one of the passengers of the 1995 Honda Civic, passed away at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
