Catawba County Commissioners Meet, Approve & Deny Requests Following Public Hearings

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners met in regular session Monday (April 18). Following a public hearing, the board approved Lenoir-Rhyne University’s qualified 501(c)(3) capital improvement bonds, pursuant to federal tax law.

The board held another public hearing to consider an application to rezone approximately 635 acres from R-40 Residential to R-80-CD Conditional District, specifically for a 325-acre utility-scale solar facility. Commissioners denied the request unanimously.

The board approved all five consent agenda items. They included a request from the Finance and Personnel Subcommittee to approve an amendment to the FY21/22 Mediko jail medical contract to add mental health services. Also included on the consent agenda was a request from the Finance and Personnel Subcommittee to transfer $1M from the System-wide Classroom Renovations project to a Hickory High School Renovations project to begin planning for needed renovations and a System-wide facility review/audit.

Following the Attorney’s Report, staff requested that commissioners approve an amendment to the Board of Adjustment’s bylaws requiring meetings to be held the third Tuesday of each month instead of the last Tuesday. The board approved the request.
