Casar Man Charged With Burke County Attempted Robbery

39-year-old Gary Troy Towery of Dirty Ankle Road in the Cleveland County town of Casar, N.C. was arrested Thursday (April 27) by Burke County Sheriff’s Officers. He’s charged with felony attempted armed robbery.

On Thursday, shortly before 11 a.m., Burke County Emergency Communications received a call from a manager at the Dollar General on 18 South in the George Hildebran area in reference to an attempted robbery. The manager said that a white male wearing camouflage clothing told the clerk that he needed all her money as he kept his left hand in his coat pocket.

The clerk did not take him seriously at first. More customers walked up to checkout and the offender walked out of the store. Burke County deputies arrived within minutes, but the suspect already had left the scene. Detectives arrived on the scene and began an investigation. The suspect was identified as Gary Troy Towery. It was learned he was driving a grey GMC Sonoma truck that was partially spray painted.

At 1:50 p.m., detectives found the suspect’s wrecked, unoccupied vehicle on Dirty Ankle Road in Casar, just below the suspect’s residence. Cleveland County deputies arrived on the scene and said that Towery had been arrested after they had received a 911 call of a male subject trying to break into vehicles. At the time of the arrest by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Towery was wearing clothing that was seen in the video at the Dollar General.

Burke County detectives obtained a warrant for arrest on Towery for attempted armed robbery to be served prior to his release. No bond or court date were listed for Towery as of earlier today (April 28).
