McCreary Cancer Center, a service of UNC Hospitals, is expanding in Lenoir. The expansion will add a brand new Elekta Infinity linear accelerator to the facility. The Elekta unit delivers high-energy x-rays to treat a diverse range of cancer patients with simple-to-complex radiotherapy needs, so they can optimally treat a wider range of patients.
The accelerator will be housed in a new, 1,200 foot addition surrounded by several-feet thick concrete walls to prevent the x-rays from leaving the treatment room. The McCreary Cancer Center had more than 26,000 patient encounters from July 2021 to June 2022, according to staff.
According to UNC Health Caldwell’s website, as of May 5, 2015, McCreary Cancer Center became a service of UNC Hospitals and a part of UNC Cancer Care; it is staffed by faculty physicians of the UNC School of Medicine to enhance access to academic-quality cancer care in Lenoir and surrounding communities. It is located at 212 Mulberry Street SW in Lenoir. The center is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
Staff at the center said they hope to have the Elekta Infinity Linear project complete in March 2023.
