Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute outscored Catawba Valley Community College by 29 points in the second half to earn a 115-86 victory Wednesday night in Hudson and sweep the season home-and-home series.
Caldwell was led in scoring by Torrence Horton with 21 points. Three other Cobras scored in double figures: Saiquone Harris with 15, Cincere Scott 13, and Chris Nobles with 11.
Catawba Valley’s Malik Hamrick led all scorers with 22 points. Tre Hill had 21 points for the Red Hawks, followed by Evan Presnell with 16 points and Benton Wofford with 14 points.
Behind strong three-point shooting, Catawba Valley led 17-7 with 16:02 left in the first half. Caldwell would chip away at the advantage and take a 30-29 lead at the 7:57 mark with a field goal by Scott. The teams would trade baskets and leads for the remainder of the half, with neither team leading by more than four points.
In the second half, Caldwell opened with a 4-0 run to lead 52-48 before Catawba Valley would respond with a 6-0 run to take a 54 -52 lead with 18:04 remaining in the game. The Cobras would respond with a 20-5 run to take control of the game at 72-59 at the 14-minute mark. Catawba Valley cut the lead to 10 points with 13:45 remaining but would not get any closer as the Cobras pulled away for their sixth win of the season.
