Caldwell Community College men’s basketball outlasted Catawba Valley Community College, 85-66 in Hudson Wednesday night.
The Cobras led 48-36 with 18:18 left in the 2nd half, when Jalen Miller hit a three and was fouled. That sparked an 13-0 run by the Cobras, all by Miller (four, three-point baskets and a foul shot) and the Cobras led 61-36 with 16:15 remaining in the game. Catawba Valley would close the margin to 76-63 with 4:40 remaining on a Javen Chandler basket, but Caldwell would stop the run on two free throws Linwood Grandy to make the score 78-63 with 2:20 to go.
CVCC’s Nasim Fuller led all scorers with 17 points. Shad Thomas added 12 for the Red Hawks. Other scorers for CVCC were Javen Chandler with nine, Nathan Brown had eight, Evan Presnell and Jadin Merritt each had six points and both Braden Graham and Jayden Watlington had four points.
Caldwell was led by Jaden Miller who had 16 points. RJ Black and Jakari Dula both had 11 and Linwood Grandy and Toyaz Soloman each chipped in 10 points. Other scorers for the Cobras were Tyrese Gwinn with six. Marcus Metcalf added five points, Pharrell Boyogueno and Ray Faison had four points, Brandon Morgan had three, Caleb Mauldin and Wardell Williams both had two points, and Ja’Mais Wertz had one point.
Caldwell Community College improves to 2-1 on the season. Catawba Valley suffers their first loss to drop to 1-1.
Caldwell will play at Central Carolina, Friday, at 7pm. Catawba Valley will also play at Central Carolina next, on Saturday, at 3pm.
