A woman was killed in a Caldwell County crash. The deceased is 82-year-old Virginia Stines Shew of Lenoir.

On Friday (July 7) at approximately 3:55 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to Abington Road near Collettsville Road. A 2005 Lincoln Town Car was traveling south on Abington Road, drove off the right side of the road, and struck part of the bridge railing.

The driver of the Town Car, a Lenoir man, was transported by medical helicopter to Johnson City Medical Center, in serious condition. The front seat passenger, Virginia Stines Shew, passed away as a result of her injuries at the scene.

During the on-scene investigation, Abington Road was closed in the area for approximately two hours. Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office.
