Caldwell County Public Library Reports Growth In Circulation And Programs
LENOIR, N.C. (WHKY) — The Caldwell County Public Library says more residents are checking out materials and taking part in library programs, with circulation now exceeding pre-pandemic goals.
Public Library Director Janet Fore reported the latest numbers during the August Caldwell County Board of Commissioners meeting. The library had set a goal in 2018 of reaching 300,000 annual checkouts. After circulation declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, it rebounded to 300,000 in 2023 and climbed to 349,000 in 2025.
Teen circulation has also continued to increase, posting double-digit growth for four consecutive years despite nationwide declines.
Programming has expanded significantly as well. Fore said the library offered eight teen programs during the summer in 2018. This year, the system’s three branches provided 42 teen programs, an increase of 425 percent. Children’s and adult programming has also expanded, including story times, STEM activities, a therapy-dog reading program, adult book clubs, creative programs and a Dungeons & Dragons group for teens.
The library also reported new highs for its Summer Reading program. This year, 1,191 children recorded 651,195 minutes of reading and received 1,374 prize books. Teens returned 108 reading-log bookmarks, while 54 adults completed the Bookology Challenge, reading 594 books.
Library officials say staff also help residents access technology, print documents needed to secure assistance with electric bills and prepare teens for DMV visits.
Fore said the growth reflects the dedication of library staff and the community’s trust in its libraries.
