Caldwell Community College Softball Sweeps Doubleheader in Top 10 Matchup
In a match-up of two NJCAA Division III softball top-ten teams, number two Caldwell swept a doubleheader against number six Surry, winning game one 3-0 and game two 10-3 Friday afternoon at Lenoir Optimist Park.
In game one, Isabelle Curry got the complete game victory in the circle, allowing no runs and only two hits.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Cobras’ Sydney Ferguson and Kenley Jackson reached on back-to-back singles. After a pop out, Christa Walsh doubled to right field, scoring Ferguson and Jackson. Zoey Walker followed with a double to left field to plate Walsh, and Caldwell led 3-0 heading into the final frame.
In game two, Surry struck first with two runs off four hits in the top of the first inning. The Knights got RBI singles from KG White and Kaylee Snow. Caldwell would answer in the home half of the inning with a RBI double by Walsh.
After the first inning, Caldwell pitcher Kylie Reid would settle down. She would allow only one run while scattering five hits over the next five innings to earn the victory.
Offensively, the Cobras took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Walsh delivered a one out double to center field to score Jackson to tie the game at two. Boston would follow with an RBI single and Caldwell led 3-2.
Leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Caldwell exploded for six runs off seven hits to put the game out of reach. Walsh finished the game going 4-4 with three doubles and three RBIs.
With the doubleheader sweep, Caldwell avenged two loses from earlier in the season against Surry. The Cobras will host another match-up of top-ten teams on Sunday when eighth ranked Patrick & Henry visits Lenoir on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 1PM.
Caldwell is 22-16 overall, 4-2 in Region 10, Division 3 play.
