Caldwell Community College Softball Stays Alive in NJCAA Tournament

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute softball rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 8-7 over Rhode Island in the elimination bracket of the National Junior College Athletics Association Division 3 tournament.

Caldwell had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kacey Triplett singled, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An out later, Emily Dudley singled, and advanced to second the throw, allowing Triplett to score. Maggie Bullard followed with a single, scoring Dudley.

Rhode Island answered with two runs in the second and a three spot in the third inning. Caldwell gained a run back in the home half of the third. Bullard singled to start the bottom of the third. She reached second on an error. Isabelle Curry took her place at second as a designated player. She would advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Antonio.

Each team scored a run in the fourth. For Caldwell, Carlee Tart doubled and scored on a Dudley single. In the fifth inning, the Cobras got a double by Taryn Estes who scored an out later when Maddison Powell singled up the middle. However, Rhode Island extended their lead to 7-5 with a run in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Powell was hit by a pitch. Aleah Ikard singled, moving Powell to second. Sydney Ferguson delivered a single up the middle, allowing Powell to score and Ikard to move to third. Triplett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a force out at home for the second out, Dudley reached on a fielders choice, moving everyone up a spot as Ferguson scored. Bullard then singled scoring Triplett and the celebration was on for the Cobras.

The win moves the Cobras along in the elimination bracket, where they will face Rowan County of South Jersey-Gloucester. Caldwell defeated them in the first game of the series, 12-0. The contest is set for 5pm Friday.
