The Caldwell Cobras scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open a tie game and defeated Fayetteville Tech 12-3 in five innings Wednesday evening to advance in the Region 10/South Atlantic District Division II Softball Tournament at Dorey Park in Henrico, VA.
Kaylee Redwine had three RBI, going two-for-three at the plate with a double. The Cobras also got two RBI a piece from Kiara Dewey, Mackenzie Johnson, and Abby Reeves.
The Trojans scored in the top of the first inning after two Caldwell errors led to a Chelsey Wilkes RBI on a ground out. Caldwell would answer back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs. Dewey had an RBI double, followed by a one out RBI single by Redwine single. Redwine would then score on a Trojan error.
Fayetteville Tech would tie the game with two runs in the top of the third inning. Wilkes got an RBI on a fielder’s choice followed by an Elizabeth Greeson RBI single that tied the game at three. The Cobras would strike back with an RBI double by Dewey and back-to-back RBI singles by Redwine and Johnson. Reeves then had a two RBI double and was brought home on a Brittney Reynolds RBI single giving Caldwell a 9-3 advantage.
Caldwell would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Ashlyn Castle scored on a pass ball. Redwine got an RBI sacrifice fly and Johnson got an RBI single to close out the Cobra scoring with 12 runs.
Starter Bri Lewis picked up the win in the circle. Molly McNulty pitched the last two innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.
Caldwell improved to 33-9 while Fayetteville Tech finished the season at 7-30. Caldwell advances to play #4 Pitt (32-10) on Thursday at 12:30PM. The two teams split their regular season doubleheader. The winner will face the winner of #8 Florence-Darlington vs. #1 Louisburg.
