Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute men’s basketball team ran their current winning streak to 13 games and won their 21st game in a row at home, holding off a rally by USC-Salkehatchie to win 96-86 Saturday afternoon.
The Cobras (18-1, 6-0 Region 10 D-1) were led in scoring by Brandon Morgan, who had 22 points. It was his fourth straight game scoring at least 20 points. The Indians (12-8, 2-5 Region 10 D-1) were led in scoring by Nevada Higgins with 22.
Caldwell, ranked 25th in the latest NJCAA Division-One poll, connected on ten three-point baskets in the first half and built a 17-point advantage at intermission. Jacob Nixon made four three-point baskets in the first half. He finished the game with five made threes for 15 points.
The Cobras led 72-53 after a steal and dunk by Morgan with 11:52 remaining in the game. USC-Salk would chip away at the advantage, closing the gap to 88-82 with 3:06 remaining after a basket by Tyler O’Neil. However, Caldwell got a basket from Torrence Horton and Morgan connected on six-of-six free throws to seal the victory.
With the victory, Caldwell remained in first place in the Region 10 Division-One standings with a 6-0 record. Brunswick Community College defeated Spartanburg Methodist College 79-73 on Saturday to remain one game back of Caldwell in the standings with a 5-1 record.
The Cobras return to the court Wednesday night at home, when they welcome Gaston College at 6PM. USC-Salk welcomes Spartanburg Methodist at 7PM on Wednesday.
