Caldwell Community College Baseball Defeats Cleveland CC

Caldwell survived two rallies from Cleveland and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win their eleventh game in a row, defeating the Yetis 14-11 in Lenoir on Wednesday afternoon.

Leading 8-3 entering the sixth inning, Caldwell surrendered six runs in the top half of the inning. Cleveland’s Josh Morgan hit a two-run homerun, followed by a walk, and the Yetis would chase Cobra starter Cody Smith from the game. Cleveland would then score three runs off Caldwell reliever Trent Black and the Yetis led 9-8 heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Caldwell would respond with three runs to reclaim the lead. Breon Ishmael’s RBI double would tie the game. With the bases loaded, Cleveland pitcher Gavin Woolery would issue back-to-back walks and the Cobras would lead 11-9 heading to the seventh inning.

The Yetis would rally again in the seventh inning to tie the game. After an error and a walk, Alex Adams hit a two RBI single to tie the game at 11.

In the eighth inning, Caldwell turned to reliever Ben Elkins. After surrendering a leadoff single, Elkins would get a ground out double play followed by another ground out to face the minimum. In the home half of the inning, Garrison Burress scored on a wild pitch and Dalton Stikeleather would give the Cobras two insurance runs with a two RBI single and Caldwell led 14-11 after eight complete.

Caldwell went to reliever Steven Smith to close the game. After giving up back-to-back walks, Smith recorded two strikeouts and a ground out to earn the save.

Ishmael collected six RBI on the day. Elkins was credited with the win on the mound. In addition to picking up the save, Smith also had three RBI.
