Caldwell Community College Baseball Advances to Region X Championship

Spencer Ledford moves to 9-0 on the mound and recorded his 80th strikeout of the season as the Cobras defeated Surry 10-0 via the mercy rule to advance to the championship of the Region 10 Division Three Tournament at Moor Park in Mooresville, 10-0.

Caldwell got two runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to back-to-back sacrifice fly RBIs by Mason Lyda and Steven Smith. Caldwell added another run in the fourth inning via a Smith RBI single to score Hayden Setzer and make the score 3-0.

In the fifth inning, Caldwell took advantage of Surry error to put runners in scoring position with no outs. The Cobras would get a sacrifice fly RBI from Jacob Bebber to push the lead to 4-0. Another error by the Knights would make the score 5-0. Lyda would then hit a two RBI double making the score 7-0. Smith would follow with a RBI single and Caldwell would lead 8-0 after five innings complete.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jermie Greene collected an RBI single, and Lyda would get his fourth RBI of the game with a single, ending the game via the mercy rule 10-0.

Caldwell improved to 43-7 and advance to the championship game on Monday at 1PM. The Cobras will face the winner of Sunday evening’s elimination game between Surry (14-28) and defending tournament champions Rockingham (15-23). Rockingham eliminated Thomas Nelson Sunday afternoon, coming from behind to win 9-6.
