Caldwell CC Baseball Downs Catawba Valley CC

Caldwell scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind to defeat Catawba Valley 19-15 Tuesday night at Henkel-Alley Field in Hickory.

Trailing 15-14 heading into the ninth inning, Caldwell’s Isaiah Kirby lead off the last frame with a homerun to tie the game. Later in the inning with one out, Bo Davidson’s RBI single would plate Dalton Stikeleather to give the Cobras a one run lead. Caldwell would add three more runs in the inning; an RBI walk by Jacob Bebber with bases loaded and Garrison Burress with a two out, two RBI single.

Steven Smith picked up in win in relief. He pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allow one unearned run off two hits while striking out four.

Caldwell jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after their first two at bats before Catawba Valley would score three runs in the second and third innings to tie the game.

The Cobras scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to reclaim the lead, but the Red Hawks would answer with five in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-8 lead heading into the fifth inning.

Catawba Valley held a 13-8 lead after six innings complete before the Cobras struck for five runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

Caldwell had seven extra base hits. Bebber, Burress, and Kirby each hit a homerun and a double. Breon Ishmael had the other extra base hit, a double. Burress finished with a game high four RBIs.

Caldwell improves to 32-3 while Catawba Valley drops to 26-19 on the season. Caldwell faces Ferrum College JV in a doubleheader Thursday starting at 3pm. Catawba Valley will host Erskine College JV also on Thursday with a 6pm first pitch.
