Caldwell Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Thomas Nelson

Caldwell Community College baseball swept a doubleheader over Thomas Nelson, 11-2 and 12-2 on Saturday at home.

In game one, Seth Willis picked up his ninth win of the season as the Cobras won their 17th game in a row. Willis is 9-2 on the season with a 2.60 ERA and 80 strike outs.

A scoreless game through three innings, Thomas Nelson struck first, getting two runs in the fourth inning. Michael Adams got a two-out, two RBI single to put the Gators on the board. Caldwell answered back in the bottom of the fourth with five runs of their own. Mason Lyda got an RBI single to score Caldwell’s first run. Coles Hales followed with a an RBI single and Jacob Bebber would get a two RBI single to make the score 4-2. Bebber would later score on a wild pitch to give the Cobras a 5-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lyda got a two RBI homerun to push the Caldwell lead to 7-2. Kayl Ratliff added an RBI single in the sixth inning. The game would end early via the mercy rule in the seventh inning when Lyda picked up RBI number four of the game on a single followed by Bebber’s fourth RBI on a two-run homerun.

In game two, Spencer Ledford remained undefeated on the season, moving to 8-0 on the mound after Caldwell picked up their 40th victory of the season and 18th in a row. Ledford’s ERA is 3.25 with 76 strike outs.

After a scoreless first inning, the game was delayed due to rain. When play resumed, Caldwell got four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Steven Smith hit a three RBI homerun. Later in the inning, Cole Hales hit a solo homerun to give Caldwell a 4-0 lead.

The Gators would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning when Tyler Butler hit a two RBI homerun. Caldwell scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to blow open the game. Easton Rhoney got an RBI single followed by three RBI homerun by Breon Ishmael. Tyler Bradley would get an RBI single as would Gavin Swanner to put the Cobras up 11-2. The game would end via the mercy rule when Smith drew a bases loaded walk to plate Darian Farley in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith finished with a team high four RBI.

Caldwell’s record is 40-7 overall and 17-0 in Region 10 Division Three play.
