Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Swan has been named the 2027 Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance, or NWRESA.

The regional honor recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to public education across western North Carolina.

According to Burke County Public Schools, Dr. Swan is currently in his 5th year leading the district. During his tenure, school officials say the district has focused on expanding academic opportunities, strengthening career and technical education programs, and building partnerships with workforce and higher education leaders.

The district also highlighted Swan’s efforts to balance instructional technology with traditional classroom teaching while planning for long-term financial sustainability.

Regional education leaders praised Swan’s collaborative leadership style and focus on students, families, and educators.

“Dr. Swan exemplifies the kind of leadership that strengthens public education,” said NWRESA Executive Director Terry Worrell in a news release.

The recognition now places Dr. Swan in consideration for North Carolina’s statewide Superintendent of the Year award, which is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association.

Dr. Swan said he was humbled by the recognition and proud of the work taking place across Burke County Public Schools.

Before becoming superintendent in July 2021, Swan served in several leadership and teaching roles within Burke County Schools. He earned degrees from West Virginia University, Gardner-Webb University, and Western Carolina University.

Dr. Swan and his wife, Sara, have two children.
