BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a growing scam in which criminals impersonate law firms, real estate agencies, businesses and other professional organizations to trick people into sending money.

Sheriff Banks Hinceman says scammers are contacting victims by phone, email and text message, claiming to represent companies or professionals the victim is already doing business with. The fraudsters then request that payments be sent using a different account, address or payment method than originally provided.

Investigators urge residents to never send money or change payment instructions without first independently verifying the request. Officials recommend contacting your attorney, real estate agent or business directly using a trusted phone number already on file—not one provided in a suspicious message.

The Sheriff’s Office also advises people to verify any payment changes directly with the company, be cautious of urgent requests demanding immediate action, and never provide financial or personal information until the request has been confirmed as legitimate.

Authorities say scammers often use information gathered from public records, social media and previous communications to make their requests appear authentic.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted or has already sent money should immediately contact local law enforcement and notify their financial institution.

Officials say taking just a few minutes to verify a payment request could prevent becoming the next victim of fraud.
