Burke County Driver Killed by Thrown Rock

On Wednesday, May 15, at approximately 8:40 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal accident in Burke County on Conley Road near Jeeter Carswell Road. The deceased is 23-year-old Brittany Elizabeth Ferguson of Morganton.

The accident occurred as a 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Ms. Ferguson was southbound on Conley Road when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a house. Ms. Ferguson passed away at the scene. During the on-scene investigation, it was determined that the vehicle’s windshield had been struck by a thrown rock, resulting in a fatal head injury to the driver.

Witnesses reported seeing a white Chevrolet S-10 single-cab truck driving back and forth in the area following the collision. Witnesses said a white male was seen riding in the bed of the truck.

The Highway Patrol requests the public’s assistance in identifying the truck. Anyone with information concerning the incident should contact the Highway Patrol at 828-466-5500. The investigation is ongoing.
