GRANITE FALLS (WHKY) – Baton Elementary was closed Thursday after a water main break left the school building without running water, school officials said.

Students were dismissed at 8:30 a.m. as officials prioritized the health and safety of students and staff.

Children who were already en route to school, including those arriving by bus, were safe, warm and supervised by staff inside the building, according to school officials.

At 8:30 a.m., morning buses ran their return routes. Parents and guardians were also able to pick up their children directly from campus. Staff remained on site until every student had been safely collected.

All morning and after-school programs were canceled for the day.

School officials said they would provide an update later in the day regarding the school’s status for the following day.

Officials thanked families for their cooperation and patience as they worked to prioritize students’ safety and health.
